At Candela Lighting Design Co., we are fanatical about lighting because it plays a key role in exterior and interior design.
Illuminating your space with different types of lights inspires as many moods, elevating the aesthetics of your home.
Why does this matter? It shows the various types of lighting categories and the specific purposes they serve.
Any type of interior or exterior illumination you come across falls into one of these categories.
There are three lighting categories, namely, ambient, accent, and task lighting.
Ambient Lighting
Ambient lighting is the primary light source in a room. It’s also called general lighting.
By providing overall illumination, ambient lighting sets the tone in a space.
This lighting especially offers comfortable and sufficient brightness levels, allowing people to move easily in a space without difficulties.
Lighting fixtures providing ambient lighting include wall sconces, ceiling lights, and floor lamps. Also critical, skylights and windows are natural sources of ambient lighting.
The optimal color temperature range for ambient lighting should be 2700K – 3000K to create a warm, cozy, and inviting atmosphere.
It’s ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, and dining spaces.
Overall, it’s the perfect lighting option for social rooms in living spaces, where people interact for lengthy periods.
Accent Lighting
Accent lighting aims at drawing attention to particular features in a space.
It features bright lights focusing on one point to highlight objects of interest such as artworks, architectural elements, etcetera.
Sources of interior accent lighting include wall-mounted fixtures, track lights, recessed lights, smart downlights, and puck lights.
In exterior spaces, LED floodlights are excellent accent lights helping to drench specific artifacts of concern with light.
Some homes already have accent lights installed – all you need to do is designing interior decor within the highlights of the lights e.g. arranging art pieces suitable walls or on certain tables.
There isn’t a specific color temperature range for all scenarios.
Instead, accent lighting philosophy emphasizes varying the color temperatures to achieve different effects.
E.g. 2700K – 3000K warm-white light creates an intimate and cozy atmosphere while 4000K – 5000K cool white light creates a bright and modern feel in spaces.
Task Lighting
Task lighting aids people in performing specialized tasks.
In particular, it illuminates a specific area, aiding a person to work on activities such as cooking, reading, or working.
Task lighting is typically brighter than ambient lighting, and focuses on a task at hand.
Task lighting sources include desk lamps, pendant lights, rope lights, under-cabinet lights, and LED strips.
These fixtures are suitable for task lighting since they are adjustable, directing light to specific spots.
The ideal color temperature for task lighting falls in the 3500K – 4500 K range.
Overall, task lighting is most suitable for areas requiring hyperfocus e.g. reading spaces, home offices, and kitchens.
A Table Summarizing Differences Between Ambient, Accent, and Task Lighting
Ambient Lighting | Accent Lighting | Task Lighting | |
Purpose | Provides general illumination in spaces. Helps set the overall tone in a space – aims for a cozy atmosphere. | Highlights specific space areas or features in a space e.g. artworks, architectural elements. | Illuminates areas where people focus on certain tasks e.g. reading (home offices), cooking (kitchens). |
Brightness | Has balanced, sufficient brightness, albeit the lowest. | Brighter than ambient lighting. | Provides brightest lighting. |
Color temperature | Warm: 2700K – 3000K | Varies.
Warm-white for cozy spaces: 2700K – 3000K. Cool white for bright spaces: 4000K – 5000K |
Cool: 3500K – 4500 K |
These three lighting types are best used in combination, rather than restricting application to just one lighting type.
Combining the three ensures the creation of comfortable well-lit spaces that ideally meet user needs.
